The ‘pocket museum’ features 50 cards, each card highlighting a different person, place, thing, or quirk of Splott’s story that celebrates a shared community pride, history, and togetherness.
The inspiring yet much overlooked story of Splott is being told in a new pocket museum telling ‘The Story of Splott in 50 Objects’ that seeks to promotes alternative tourism while also serving as a teaching resource and builds greater community pride, togetherness, and a better shared future.
Splott campaigners are hoping their museum will inspire other local communities across Cardiff, Wales and the UK to co-create their own pocket museums to tell their stories.
Launched by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Cllr. Helen Lloyd Jones the pocket museum features 50 cards, each celebrating a different person, place, or quirk of one of the most highly cherished but little commemorated inner-city district of the Welsh capital.
Splott’s inspiring stories include the first-ever black captain for Great Britain or a home nation in any sport - Clive Sullivan MBE, and former Prime Minister James Callaghan was its local MP.
Splott once boasted an aerodrome that was an RAF base in World War II with many more local treasures in its collection. The museum was produced by local people collaborating to cocreate their shared heritage, character, and vibrant future at events ranging from an historic bus tour of the area on a vehicle built in Splott in the 1930’s, to bingo and quiz nights, visiting local school, community groups, refugee centres, along with online social media call outs, and simply asking passers-by what they want to see in their museum.
The project is run by Splott Community Volunteers, local community news site Inksplott, and social enterprise Grow Social Capital, with the support of the Doc Media Centre and the Jo Cox Foundation’s More in Common campaign. It is supported through Cardiff Council’s community cohesion programme, funded by the UK Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund.
Welcoming visitors near and far to Splott, Lynne Thomas, CEO of Splott Community Volunteers said, “Our new pocket museum tells the often unheard Splott story, celebrating its fascinating history, diversity, inclusivity, and shared values.”
Today we welcomed the High Sheriff of South Glamorgan to our centre and were thrilled to receive an award in recognition of great and valuable services to the community. It was another proud moment for our amazing volunteers and we continue to be incredibly grateful for their continued commitment, passion and dedication.
Lynne accompanied the amazing Angela Bullard to a Humanitarian Reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the work of incredible individuals who have made a real difference to people globally, nationally and locally. The reception was hosted by Their Majesties King Charles and Queen Camilla and we had a lovely chat with the Queen about Splott Community Volunteers and our contribution to alleviating food poverty at a hyperlocal level. Angela was nominated by Welsh Government in recognition of her, Fred Bullard and Trisha Mardon's visionary work in launching Splott Community Volunteers ten years ago and the achievements of the charity over the last decade.

As part of their social value support, national construction company Morgan Sindall has pledged to sponsor one breakfast club a month for the duration of 2025, ensuring that we can cover the costs of food and overheads.
The Trustees, staff and volunteers would like to say a huge thank you to Morgan Sindall for their support, which will help us deliver hot food and a bag of shopping to between 80 and 100 people a week.
On the 11th November 2024, Splott Community Volunteers was awarded Volunteer Group of the Year at the Cardiff Volunteer Awards 2024 hosted by Cardiff Third Sector Council.
There were 32 volunteer groups nominated in the category and staff and volunteers were over the moon to have been recognised for their work supporting people in Splott and surrounding areas.
Lynne Thomas, Project Manager, said:
"Delighted for our amazing volunteers! Tonight we won Volunteer Group of the Year at the C3SC - Cardiff Third Sector Council Cardiff Volunteer Awards! Huge thanks to all of our volunteers for their hard work and dedication, and thank you to C3SC, all of the sponsors, speakers and participants. What a fabulous start to the week!"
The St David’s Awards is an annual celebration of the incredible contribution to business, environment, heroism and activism in Wales. This year, Angela Bullard of Splott Community Volunteers was nominated for an award in the Community Spirit category.
Splott was firmly on the map last week when one of the three founders of Splott Community Volunteers was recognised for her outstanding contribution to community spirit at the 2024 St David’s Awards.
The national awards scheme recognises and celebrates the exceptional achievements of people in Wales. Each year there are 10 St David Awards, the first 9 of which are nominated for by the public, and Angela was nominated in the Community Spirit category.
The finalists and winners are decided upon by the First Minister of the Welsh Government and his advisers. Newly appointed First Minister, Vaughan Gething, presented winners with their awards and outgoing First Minister Mark Drakeford presented special awards to Alan Bates and The Windrush Generation Organisation for their inspirational work.
Out of all the people nominated in Wales this year, Angela was recognised for her extraordinary contribution through her volunteering at Splott Community Volunteers, a local charity aiming to alleviate food poverty and provide meaningful volunteering experiences for people in Splott and surrounding areas.
Though Angela was pipped to the post by a lovely lady making a massive difference to young people in Merthyr, her contribution to community spirit was celebrated on the night of the awards and her co-volunteers and colleagues are incredibly proud of her.
"I really appreciated being nominated for the St David’s Award – it is always nice to know that your efforts are so appreciated.
I didn’t manage to bring the award back to the team, but I really did appreciate the nomination more than the award, and it did go to a very worthy winner!
Besides, I had a couple of lovely evenings – the first at the Senedd and then at the Royal College of Music and Drama for the actual award ceremony. Both were very happy occasions with delicious food, lovely music and nice people. It was wonderful to hear the stories of each individual who had been shortlisted, and I have to admit that a few tears were shed!
We met lots of wonderful people with incredible stories and formed mutually beneficial links for the future.
The whole event was something to treasure for life – and I most certainly will."
Earlier this year, Splott Community Volunteers signed up to the first national Action Day of Age Without Limits – a major new anti-ageism campaign from the Centre for Ageing Better.
The theme of this year’s Action Day was ‘See and Be Seen’ and will look to challenge the often narrow, negative and stereotypical way older people and ageing is portrayed. In response to this, Splott Community Volunteers created the Vintage not Vanished hanging portrait exhibition, shining a light on its older volunteers and the incredible work they do, highlighting their wide, varied and valuable contributions through a series of portraits and events.
From Tuesday the 19th of March to Friday the 22nd of March, Splott Community Volunteers hosted the photography exhibition in their facility at the rear of the Old STAR Leisure Centre in Splott between the hours of 10am and 2pm.
Dr Carole Easton, Chief Executive at the Centre for Ageing Better, said:
"“It is fantastic that Splott Community Volunteers is participating in our first Age Without Limits campaign Action Day. Our campaign can only grow with the support of organisations and individuals who share our ambition to end ageism.
“Our own research indicates that over half of people think older people are less visible in society. I hope as many organisations and individuals as possible from around the country can come together on our Action Day to signal their commitment to combat ageism. We must challenge the negative stereotypes in which older people and ageing is portrayed and instead shine a more realistic light on the myriad ways people experience older age in England and Wales.”
Ed Stubbs, Chair of the Splott Community Volunteers board of trustees said:
“This is an amazing opportunity to celebrate our older residents and the work of our volunteers. We are really proud to be hosting this event and hope that Splott is equally as proud of the fantastic contribution older volunteers have made to Splott Community Volunteers.”
Last month Cosmo and band managed to raise nearly £50 for Ukrainian Humanitarian relief. Nice one folks! Thanks so much to everyone who contributed, liked shared and generally spread the word! This month it's time to turn attention nearer home to the cost of living crisis which is engulfing us all with even more ferocity starting today. 1st April 2022.
As the price of utilities, food and VAT goes up, and wages and Universal Credit go down, this is an emergency situation for many. The proceeds of this track will go to my local food bank and volunteer hub, the Splott Community Volunteers. They're doing fantastic work out there in parts of our community that are really struggling. If you buy the digital download of this track, that's where the money will head.
From Monday 2nd May 2022, all profits from the sale of the digital track of this song will go to Splott Community Volunteers. Their Breakfast Club and Food bank has been a lifeline in this area of Cardiff throughout the pandemic and beyond.
